Frequently Asked Questions

01  Can you explain 3 year/3,000 directed practice hour minimum and 120 supervision hours requirement before taking CSW exam?

Applicants for CSW exam must work in a clinical setting for a minimum of 3 years (36 months) of directed practice (which means you are supervised at the clinical agency by an LCSW, LPC, LMFT, Psychologist or Psychiatrist).  Note: you will have more than 3,000 hours at the end of 3 years.  If you are working part-time, you must do 20 hours/week in clinical setting to reach the 3,000 minimum in 3 years (e.g. 50 weeks x 20 hours = 1,000 x 3 years = 3,000).  *Note - only 50 of the 52 weeks of the year  is  included in this calculation because 2 weeks of the year is usually vacation, holidays, sick, etc.

02   Can you explain the 120 supervision hours requirement for  taking the CSW exam?

Clinical supervision is described by Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) as an interactional professional relationship. The 120 hours of supervision required to take the CSW exam must be provided by an LCSW (with minimum 2 years/2000 post license experience), LPC (with 3 years post license experience), LMFT (with 3 years post license experience). A Psychologist or Psychiatrist can provide supervision if they have met the requirements of their profession to be a supervisor.

Of the 120 supervision hours:

  • Sixty (60) of the 120 hours must be provided by LCSW

  • Group (maximum of 6 persons per group session) -  maximum of 60 hours allowed for group supervision either by LCSW, LPC, LMFT, Psychologist or Psychiatrist

  • Individual - all 120 hours can be from individual supervision (60 by LCSW and 60 by LPC, LMFT, Psychologist or Psychiatrist

03  What is meant by a clinical agency?

In 2015 the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) defines a clinical practice as "...the application of specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills in the areas of assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, conditions and addictions.  Treatment methods include the provision of individual, marital, couple, family and group counseling and psychotherapy..." (p.6)  Any setting where clinical practice is performed should qualify - also must have qualified supervisors listed in #1 and #2 above.

*NOTE:  If you are not sure if your agency qualifies as a clinical agency for the purpose of taking the CSW exam, contact the Georgia Composite Board of PC, SW and MFT at  (478) 207-2440
